A drone for the rest of us

Hunting for evil-doers during your next trip to the Pakistan frontier? There’s an app for that.

Thanks to the good people at Parrot, we now have the personal drone. You can not only control the new AR.Drone from your iPhone, you can enjoy the drone’s-eye view right there on your iPhone screen. So with just a little creativity, you can probably violate multiple laws at once. Hellfire missiles not included.

(Just debuted at CES. No word on availability yet.)

  • 1st sign of bad 3D? no shadows on the ground when everything else around it has 12 high shadows … like the brush and trees, and the lack of reflection in things it “passes” on the street … that and the guys overly animated hand gestures affirming ‘control’, steady hands fly RC heli-bots not guys with St Vitus dance…

    potentially? the best “let’s take a peek into the girls shower” since the hole in the wall from “Porky’s” …

    This is interesting, and you’re right, probably a potential violation of multiple laws. I can just imagine the fear this strikes at Homeland Security and FBI. Not to mention a whole host of privacy issues.

    But on the “cool meter,” I’d say it ranks pretty high.

    @Zubin:
    Somehow I suspect these guys are getting a bit ahead of themselves. Like how far away from your iPhone can it actually fly? I suspect it will cost multiple thousands and then be only slightly more satisfying than that tiny remote helicopter they sell in a kiosk at the mall. But technology marches on. In another year or two, who knows? (Meanwhile, draw your drapes — my drone knows where you live.)

  • hey ken, good point about distance given AT&T’s crappy network, more of these will crash due to signal drop than will actually fly to the YWCA …

  • Zubin

    Ken, if your drone enters my airspace, I have instructed mine to shoot it down (my drone is bigger than yours).

    If it runs off AT&T’s cell phone network, forget it … but if you can make it run off of a satellite network (e.g. directv), then you’re getting somewhere. I expect the latter would be quite expensive … and frankly a silly use of valuable bandwidth … but commerce is commerce and if the market bears … can you imagine how much our kids will love this if/when it comes to market??

  • i know LOTS of college freshman will have a GREAT time with this …

    @marino:
    Stop kidding yourself. You know you’re going to have just as good a time with it…

  • i’m trying to attach an Oakley Red camera to a heli-bot as we speak … Columbia U is just down the river …

  • Heya i’m for the primary time here. I came across
